• Traditionally used to help support symptoms of diarrhea, chronic headache, asthma, coughs, anxiety and more.
Wood Betony
Betonica officinalis
(Common Betony)

Medicinal Usage

Antonius Musa, the Emperor Augustus's physician, said that the herb "preserved the liver and body of man from the danger of epidemical problems, and also from witchcraft." He also claimed that it supported symptoms of forty-seven different disorders.

Betony has a root with a disagreeable taste, emetic and purgative in a dose of 2-4 grams in 190-250 grams of a suitable vehicle. This plant, the Ancients advise great caution in its use, and to which they ascribed the most wonderful virtues, has today, lost this reputation.

The leaves, dried and help reduced to a fine powder, are still used as sternutatories because of their bitter stimulant properties. Taken like snuff, Betony provokes the excretion of the mucous membrane in the nasal passages, producing a useful revulsion in some cases of ophthalmy, odontalgia, persistent headache and chronic coughing.

Culpeper writes: "The herb is appropriated to the planet Jupiter and the sign Aries... and causes an easy and speedy delivery of women in child-birth."

Miscellaneous

Although found growing wild throughout England, betony was commonly cultivated in monastic herb-gardens.

Wood Betony, also referred to as Bishopswort, and simply as Betony, is a member of the mint family found in Europe, and was once held in high regard by ancient folk healers. Used as a herbal product for a host of human ills ranging from the common cold to warding off supernatural spirits, Betony is still used by herbal practitioners, though for a much more limited set of maladies.

Current use of the dried herb of Betony involves the use of a liquid extract or infusion as a herb that can be used for chronic headaches and to help support anxiety and nervousness. Wood Betony can also be used in supporting palpitations, asthma, coughs, and kidney stones. Like most herbs, Wood Betony possesses mild astringent properties, for which it is occasionally recommended to help support diarrhea, or as a mouthwash to soothe mucous membranes of the mouth and throat.

Betony contains relatively high amounts of tannin, explaining its astringent activity. It also contains choline, alkaloids and glycosides. One glycoside has been shown to help support healthy blood pressure levels, possibly supporting its use to help support anxiety and headaches.

Wood betony can be been used as a panacea since ancient times and is traditionally accepted to be effective against many health concerns. In central Europe it is taken mainly to help support diarrhoea, indigestion and catarrh of the upper respiratory tract, or it is gargled against mouth irritations and gingivitis. In modern times, it is mainly used against headache and neuralgia. The herb is also considered to be a useful bitter tonic to aid in digestion and to help support stress and tension. In homoeopathy, the fresh flowering herb is used.

Wood Betony
Stachys officinalis (L.) Trev. (= Stachys betonica, = Betonica officinalis L.).

Family: Lamiaceae.

Other Names: Bétoine (French); Betonie, Heilziest (German); betonica (Italian).

Description: Betony is a perennial herb of up to 0.6 m in height, with square stems bearing hairy, heart-shaped to oblong leaves and clusters of attractive, small, tubular, purple flowers at the tips. Three other well known species are S. palustris (marsh palustris), S. recta that are sometimes used traditionally and S. byzantina, the familiar garden plant known as lamb's ears. A species with edible tubers is the Japanese artichoke, S. affinis (= S. tuberifera).

Origin: Europe and Asia. The plant is commonly cultivated as an ornamental plant and is often seen in herb gardens.

Parts Used: Dried, aboveground parts, harvested during the flowering period (Betonicae herba).

Therapeutic Category: Sedative, bitter tonic.

Preparation and Dosage: About 1 - 2 g of the dry herb is steeped in a cup of boiling water and taken one to three times per day.

Active Ingredients: The chemical variation in wood betony is not well studied. However, the plant contains alkaloids such as stachydrine and betonicine, and tannins (15%) and unspecified bitter substances. Aerial parts of the plant contain several phenylethanoid glycosides, including acetoside, two epimers of campneoside II, forsythoside B, leucosceptoside B and betonyosides A-F.

Health Effects: Tannins are likely to be responsible for the antidiarrhoeal, anti-inflammatory effects, while the sedative properties have been ascribed to the alkaloids. The contribution of the phenylethanoids to the positive health activity of the herb is not clear.

Status: Traditional health.

Wood betony affects the nervous system, the liver, and the heart. Composed of alkaloids, tannins, choline, and betaine, to name a few of the key chemicals, wood betony has sedative, nervine, bitter tonic, and astringent properties. It is most often used to help support health complaints such as anxiety-induced headaches, nervousness, and various minor aches and pains.

Wood betony is good for chronic headaches, nervousness, neuralgia and anxiety. Combine with equal parts feverfew, rosemary and skullcap for a nervous headache.

Pronounced with emphasis on the first syllable, betony also goes by many other common names: lousewort, bishopwort, purple betony, and wood betony. The botanical name for this herb comes from the Greek word stachys, meaning "spike", because of the arrangement of its blooms. Betony is native to open woodlands and heaths from Scotland to the Mediterranean and from Spain to the Caucasus. Sir William Hookers (the first director of the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, Surrey) claimed the English name betony is a corruption of the Celtic words bew ("head") and ton ("tonic"), as the tea is believed to help support nervous headaches and tension. Older herbals claim betony purifies the blood and is a fine, natural painkiller. In European monasteries, it was used to help support shortness of breath. The Saxons believed chewing betony leaves before a party would help avoid drunkenness, and an infusion was supposed to help avoid bad dreams.

Plant Facts and Growing Tips

Plant: Hardy perennial. The hairy, unbranched, or slightly branched stems have opposite leaves that are oblong at the bottom of the plant and lance-shaped closer to the top. Whorls of red-purple flowers bloom from July into August. The plant has a musky odor.

Height: 8 to 24 inches.

Soil: Deep, fertile, well drained, moderately moist.

Exposure: Full sun or partial shade.

Propagation: Seeds or "nutlets" that fall free around the plant are sown in fall or in spring during the third lunar phase. You may also make root cuttings.

Care: Betony is a slow grower. The plants may benefit from division and replanting every third or fourth year. However, if they're thriving and blooming well, leave them alone.

Part Used for Tea: Leaves.

Taste: Pleasant, warm, astringent; slightly bitter, so you may want to sweeten with honey. How to Brew

By Infusion: 1 teaspoon dried leaf (or 3 teaspoons crushed fresh leaf). Place in a porcelain pot, cover with 1 cup boiling water, then steep to taste. Don't overindulge - betony tea made from fresh leaves can have a rather intoxicating effect!
