• Traditionally used to help support circulation problems, inflammation, varicose veins, irritated and itchy skin, joint pain and more.

• Supports circulation problems, inflammation, varicose veins, irritated and itchy skin, joint pain and more.
Horse Chestnut is also known by the names Buckeye and Spanish Chestnut. Note: do not confuse Horse Chestnut with its North relative Aesculusglabra californica, California Buckeye. The name Horse Chestnut arises historically from the use of this herb to help support horse's coughs, and being used as animal feed. The Horse Chestnut tree is native to Asia and northern Greece, but it is now cultivated in many areas of Europe and North America. The tree produces fruits that are made up of spiny capsules containing one to three large seeds, known as Horse Chestnuts. The tree grows from 50 to 80 feet high. The Horse Chestnut, Aesculus hippocastanum, which has also been known as Hippocastanum vulgare, is an entirely different tree from the Sweet Chestnut (a culinary herb), to which it is not even distantly related. An old folk supportive to help support hemorrhoids and joint pain using Horse Chestnut was to simply carry a chestnut around in one's pocket until it hardened, then replace it with a fresh one. The parts of this plant used for health benefits are the seeds, bark, and leaves.

Primary chemical constituents of Horse Chestnut include saponins (aescin), glycosides (aesculin and fraxin), hydroquinine, tannins, and flavones. It is believed that the aescin content inhibits inflammation in cells without weakening phagocytosis. The unique actions of Horse Chestnut are on the vessels of the circulatory system. This herb seems to increase the strength and tone of the veins, in particular. It inhibits the enzyme hyaluronidase, and makes veins less permeable and less fragile.

Horse Chestnut can improve the tone of veins and increase the flow of blood through them. Horse Chestnut leaves have been used as a cough supportive and to help support fevers. They were also believed to help support joint pain. Externally, Horse Chestnut can be been used as a lotion for pain support from hemorrhoids, joint pain, swellings, varicose veins, and leg irritations. Primary internal uses for Horse Chestnut are for support of capillary weakness, edema, frostbite, hemorrhoids, phlebitis, and varicose veins. Horse Chestnut also helps move congestion, and strengthening the capillaries while decreasing their permeability. Horse Chestnut is also utilized extensively in Europe as an anti-inflammatory agent for a variety of health complaints, in addition, it can be used to help support vascular problems.

A topical aescin preparation is very popular in Europe for the potential to help support symptoms of acute sprains during sporting events. Scientific studies (randomized double-blind, placebo- controlled) have shown that Horse Chestnut can reduce edema. A clinical study compared Horse Chestnut extract to compression stockings and placebo for varicose veins - both the herbal health and the stockings significantly reduced edema of the lower legs compared to placebo.

Widely grown in southeastern Europe, the European version of horse chestnut is a tall tree, called horse chestnut because the crushed nut is added to horse feed. The variety is common in Ohio, where it's called buckeye. The seeds. are peeled, mashed, and pulped for medical use.

Potential Health Benefits

Extract from the seed was reviewed and approved by Commission E for chronic venous insufficiency and pathological complaints of the veins of the legs. Horse chestnut seed can reduce swelling of the legs, cramps in the calves, and pain and feeling of heaviness in the legs. (The flowers, bark, and other plant parts weren't specifically endorsed.)

Scientific Evidence

The active ingredient in horse chestnut seed is aescin (also spelled escin). It tightens up the walls of the capillaries, helping to help avoid blood leakage, and helps reduce the activity of lyposomal enzymes implicated in causing problems in the veins of the legs. In a 1996 German study, test subjects with varicose veins who took 50 millgrams of aescin per day achieved as much reduction in their legs as people wearing compression stockings who didn't take supplements.

How to Use the Herb

Of the bark: Simmer 1 ounce in 1 pint of water for 20 minutes. Take only 1 tablespoon three or four times daily.

Of the fruit: Make a liquid extract with the ground-up fruits and take 5-20 drops three times daily.

The bark of the Horse Chestnut contains fraxin, tannin and above all esculin. The aqaueous solution of this last principle is somewhat fluorescent much more so than quinine sulphate. Odourless, bitter tasting, esculin has been prescribed as a substitute for quinine in intermittent fevers. But it is above all used to help support periodic neuralgia. The bark itself can be been used as a febrifuge and antiseptic. The root is regarded in America as poisonous, hence, the name poison-root. The seed contains an oil used externally for rheumatic and joint pain complaints.

Name

Aesculus hippocastaflum, L. (Hippocastaflaceae), commonly called the Horse Chestnut or Conker tree seed in English. In French, it is Marronier d'inde; in German, Rosskastiensamen or Rosskastanie.

Source

Remedies are made from the horse chestnut seed, supplied whole or in powdered form. Horse chestnut probably came from India originally, but it is now grown in most temperate climates. Large amounts are produced in Eastern Europe.

History

The naming of this plant is a bit confusing, because Aesculus is the word the Greeks used to describe oak trees. The name horse chestnut probably derives from the fact that during the Middle Ages, fruits of this tree were used to feed cattle and horses. One of the components of the plant, cyclamin, is particularly toxic to fish. In India, fishermen used to put horse chestnut extracts into the water in order to paralyze the fish and make them easier to catch. During the 1500s, horse chestnut made its way from India to Europe where herbalists used the fruits to help support hemorrhoids.

Traditional Support Uses

In addition to supporting hemorrhoids, tea from the fruit was used to help support symptoms of joint pain. Fluid extracts of horse chestnut were used to protect the skin from prolonged sun exposure - the first sun block. Before quinine became widely available, horse chestnut extracts were used to help support fevers. Today, it is mostly recommended against venous insufficiency and for helping support prostate concerns. In Germany, it is the agent most widely used to help support swelling of the legs from venous health issues.

Commission E Recommendations

Horse chestnut can be used to help support itching, leg cramps, post-operative or post-traumatic swelling and varicose veins.

Possible Effects

Horse Chestnut's beneficial effects are thought to derive from a group of chemical compounds called saponins - a name given to a group of molecules that resemble steroids, except that they have a sugar molecule attached. Saponins have soap-like effects; when mixed with water, they produce a lather. The saponins contained in horse chestnut are collectively called escins (Ia, Ib, IIa, and IIb). It is not clear whether all the escins, or just one of the subtypes, is medically effective, but horse chestnut extract clearly reduces the swelling seen in the legs of patients with chronic venous insufficiency. The effectiveness of this supportive has been proven in multiple European clinical trials.

How to Use the Herb

The daily dose is 100 milligrams of aescin, corresponding to 250-312.5 milligrams of extract. Take it twice per day in delayed-release form.

The bark and fruit of horse chestnut are both used, health-wise, to help support the intestines and are especially useful for hemorrhoids and various rectal or bowel problems. The bark, which is considered to be tonic, narcotic, and a febrifuge, contains aesculin, ash, and tannin; the seeds contain phytosterols, starch sugar, and linoleic, palmitic, and stearic acids.

The bark can be used to help support intermittent fevers and externally for irritations and sores. The fruit can be used to help support rectal problems, such as hemorrhoids, and for other problems of a rheumatic and neuralgic nature.

Dosage

Commission E recommends use of powdered extract standardized to contain 16-20 percent of dried escin to deliver a dose of 250-313 milligrams twice a day.

The two principal herbs in this blend are horse chestnut and cayenne pepper, each of which has been used historically, and supported scientifically, in supporting hemorrhoids or piles. Horse chestnut helps reduce blood vessel permeability and can be useful for both varicose veins and hemorrhoids or piles. Studies done in Europe found that horse chestnut helped to increase blood flow, strengthen connective tissue, tighten up veins, and decrease redness and swelling. Cayenne pepper can be useful for facilitating blood flow, as piles are characteristic of sluggish blood flow in the area of the veins in and around the anus.

Swelling and throbbing can be reduced by the inclusion of the tonic herb, white oak bark; its bitter and astringent qualities have been valued for centuries and its ability to tighten tissues and strengthen blood vessels. Witch hazel offers further restorative properties for the tissue lining and helps reduce bleeding.
