Greater Celandine
Chelidonium majus L.

Family: Papaveraceae.

Other Names: Chélidoine, grande-éclaire (French); Schöllkraut (German); celidonia, cinerognola (Italian); celidonia (Spanish).

Description: A perennial herb with yellow-green, deeply lobed leaves and orange-yellow flowers. It closely resembles plants of the family Brassicaceae (Cruciferae) but may be recognised by the bright yellow or orange latex that exudes from broken stems.

Origin: Europe, Asia and North Africa; naturalised in North America.

Parts Used: Whole herb (Chelidonii herba) - usually as extracts, rarely the roots.

Therapeutic Category: Cholagogue, spasmolytic.

Uses and Properties: Extracts can be used to help support a healthy digestive system and bile duct. It is said to clean the gallbladder and stimulate bile flow in cases of liver complaints, jaundice and gallstones. The yellow sap is traditionally applied to warts (alkaloids are virucidal!) and employed for other skin concerns, and skin irritations; support for eye complaints.

Active Ingredients: More than 20 protopine, protoberberine and benzophenanthridine alkaloids are present (up to 1% of dry weight). The main compounds are protopine, berberine, coptisine, chelidonine, sanguinarine and chelerythrine. The alkaloids are complexed by chelidonic acid.

Health Effects: Berberine and sanguinarine are strong DNA intercalating agents and therefore disinfectant. Most alkaloids can interfere with neuroreceptors and other proteins, which explains their antispasmodic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties. The herb seems to directly stimulate bile secretion rather than just bile flow. Animal studies have indicated choleretic activity.

Notes: The yellow flowers and sap were formerly used to help support jaundice (Doctrine of Signatures).

Status: Traditional health, Pharm.; Comm. E+.

Preparation and Dosage: Extracts of the alkaloids are nowadays used as standardised medicines. A daily dose of 2 - 5 g of the dried herb (containing 12 - 30 mg of alkaloids) maybe taken as an infusion. About 0.5 - 1 g (half to one teaspoon) is steeped in 150 mL water for 10 minutes and taken three times per day between-meals.

The dried herb is used in infusion of one-half ounce to a pint of boiling water. The liquid extract is best made from the fresh plant and 5-10 drops are taken as a single dose three times daily.

When the plant is rubbed, it gives off a noxious odor. When cut, a milky juice is secreted from all its parts, a beautiful orange-yellow in color and bitter and corrosive enough to be used to remove warts. In medicine, the Celandine is an aperitive, diuretic, febrifuge and purgative, but it must be used with great care.

The bitter aerial portions of celandine, or greater celandine as it is sometimes called, supports the liver and the colon. Its alterative, diuretic, purgative, antispasmodic, diaphoretic, anodyne, and narcotic properties have made the herb useful for liver congestion, liver health, gallstones, asthma and spasmodic coughs, and skin problems. Externally, celandine can be used to help support healthy vision (with milk) or warts (the fresh juice of the herb). In biochemical terms, celandine contains various alkaloids including allocryptopine, berberine, chelamine, chelidonine, coptisine, sanguinarine, sparteine and others. The root contains choline, histamine, tyramine, saponins, chelidoniol, chelidonic acid, carotene, and vitamin C.

Celandine is primarily used as a liver detoxifying herb for the potential to help support a healthy liver, jaundice, immunity issues, psoriasis, skin irritations and skin problems. In addition to its blood-purifying properties, celandine also supports muscle spasms and bronchial spasms. It also seems to counteract mucus in the lungs and bronchioles, making it a possible support for asthma. It mildly lowers arterial blood pressure, produces diuresis, and delays the development of anaphylactic shock. The Chinese have done extensive studies demonstrating its effectiveness for the support for coughs and colds.

The fresh juice mixed with milk is directly applied to remove white spots that form on the cornea of the eye. The fresh acrid juice can also bedirectly applied to remove warts.

Greater celandine is a member of the poppy family, completely unrelated to the lesser celandine or pilewort, which belongs to the buttercup group. It is notable for its brilliantly colored sap which makes an ideal supportive for clearing warts: simply apply a little each morning, taking care not to get too much of the juice on surrounding areas as it can be corrosive.

Internally, Celandine can be used to help support liver health, helping cleanse the gallbladder and helping to stimulate bile flow in the liver and jaundice. Celandine is also a diuretic and can be used as a cleansing supportive for skin complaints where liver stagnation is a contributing factor.

In the UK, the use of greater celandine is restricted to professional practitioners only, however, since the maximum dosage given in the legislation (200 ml of a liquid extract per week) is at least three times what would normally be prescribed, it can be considered as safe and side-effect free in normal dosages.

An old name for Celandine is "swallow wort", which dates from an ancient Greek tradition, repeated by herbalists as recently as the 17th century, that swallows fed the seeds to their young to improve their eyesight. It is true that Celandine was widely recommended in the 17th century for eye complaints.

Joint pain and tendonitis

Since I began using this product a year ago, I have referred it to many other folks. It is, by far, the longest-lasting topical aids I've used that is virtually ordorless and stainless, and provides swift relief. I recommend it to everyone who battles joint pain, sore muscles or tendonitis.
