• Traditionally used to help support skin concerns, inflammation, high blood sugar levels, wounds, insect bites and much, much more.
The bitter and astringent by-products of the neem tree have been used for centuries for the potential to help support symptoms of inflammations, fevers, skin problems, and gum health. It's also an extremely effective and environmentally friendly agricultural spray against insects. The bark, leaves, and seeds of the neem tree are all used for their anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and astringent actions on the body. The bodily systems that most benefit the healthy actions of neem include the skin, the lungs and the colon. Neem contains terpenoids such as the azadirachtins, triterpenoid bitters, tannins, flavonoids, and various other compounds.

Neem seed oil can be used to help support a wide variety of skin problems. An extract of the leaves and bark has powerful disinfectant activity with little or no toxicity. It is can be taken internally as a disinfectant. The branches of the tree are chewed and used to clean the teeth and support and avoid gum inflammation. An extract of the leaves and bark is used in agriculture as one of the most promising natural substances to help control insects. When sprayed directly onto the plants and ground, the non-toxic protective property seems to become systemic in the plant and continues its effects for some time after.

Neem Leaf, also known as Village Pharmacy, Margosa, Nimba, Sarva Roga, and Nivarini, is derived from the famous Neem Tree of the Indian subcontinent. The benefits of the Neem Leaf are almost too numerous to mention. The leaf has been used in Ayurveda since at least the dawn of written language in India.

One of the prime uses of Neem Leaf over the years is in skin care. It works as an antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory agent. Neem Leaf is considered to be the aspirin of Indian health. Neem Leaf can be useful in helping support skin irritations and acne. Traditional methods include crushing the leaves into a paste and applying directly to wounds, irritations or skin problems. Neem Leaf is an astringent and, in Ayurveda, is considered effective in balancing Vata disorders. It is believed to remove toxins from the body, neutralize free radicals, and purify the blood.

Neem Leaf can also be used for its disinfectant properties. Indians still sprinkle fresh Neem Leaf around the beds of those ill with colds or fever. Neem Leaf is also hung in the doorways of the sick, the belief being that air flowing past the Neem will be purified. Neem Leaf can also be used in India for pest control. Farmers mixed Neem Leaf with grain before storing it. The Neem would act as a repellent toward weevils, beetles, and moths. Neem Leaf can also be used against insect bites. It is used topically to remove the toxins from wasp and ant stings. Neem Leaf can also be used to support the eyes and nourishing to the hair.

Neem Leaf has been the focus of much research recently, and has shown much promise in the area of immunity improvement, especially when combined with Garlic. Neem Leaf has also been studied as a natural contraceptive and as an anti-infective. It has also traditionally been used to help support malaria and blood sugar level issues. Many tests have shown Neem Leaf's potential to help support blood glucose levels. Neem Leaf has also been shown to help support toxicity in the liver. It can also be used extensively in supporting neuromuscular pain and inflammation.

Neem Tree
Azadirachta indica A. Juss.

Family: Meliaceae.

Other Names: Neem; nim; margousier, neem (French); Nimbaum, Neembaum (German); nem (Italian); margosa (Spanish).

Description: Neem is an evergreen tree of 10 m or more in height with large, pinnately compound leaves. The leaflets are somewhat sickle-shaped and have serrate margins. Inconspicuous white flowers are borne in summer.

Origin: The tree is thought to be indigenous to Sri Lanka, India and Burma. It is now widely cultivated in many parts of the Old World tropics, including Indonesia and Africa.

Parts Used: Bark, leaves, twigs, seeds.

Therapeutic Category: Skin restoring (possibly anti-malarial, contraceptive, anti-joint pain).

Uses and Properties: Neem is widely used in Ayurveda, can be used to help support skin infections and wounds. Numerous other ailments are traditionally supported, including stomach problems, haemorrhoids and malaria. It can also be used in soaps, lotions and toothpastes.

Active Ingredients: The positive health activity of neem is due mainly to bitter triterpenoids (limonoids) of which azadirachtin is one of the main compounds; also tannins and flavonoids are present.

Health Effects: Azadirachtin is a powerful insect antifeedant that disrupts metamorphosis in moth larvae at extremely low concentrations. The main focus of research on neem has been on the insecticidal properties but in recent years investigations have expanded to the medicinal utilisations. Several papers have shown disinfectant activity in extracts of neem leaves and seeds, likely to be due to the limonoids. A volatile fraction of neem seed oil (coded as NIM-76) was shown to have potent in vitro spermicidal activity. The activity has been linked to various free fatty acids and their methyl esters. A large number of studies have been published on the health properties of neem and neem extracts, covering a wide range of indications and ailments.

Notes: Few cultivated trees are more hardy, useful and versatile than the neem tree - in addition, to medicine, it provides shade, firewood, fodder, oil (from the seeds), natural insecticide and ingredients for toothpaste and soap.

Status: Traditional health.
