This is the highest grade of white tea available before one enters the stratosphere in pricing for white teas such as Peony White Needle Tea. Pai Mu Tan leaves are plucked from a special varietal tea bush called Narcissus or chaicha bushes. Secondly the leaves are not steamed or pan-fired (the process used in green teas). The leaves are naturally withered and dried in the sun. If mechanical drying is required it is a baking process at temperatures less that 40 degrees celsius. Thirdly only special "two leaves and a bud" are selected. These leaves must show a very light green almost gray white color and be covered with velvet peach fuzz down. White teas that are withered in that are too hot with become reddish and in that are too cold they will become blackish. You will see on this Pai Mu Tan that the tea maker struck the perfect balance between solar and indoor withering resulting in a perfect white tea.

The western cosmetic industry has recently discovered the benefits of white tea. In addition to its immunity boosting properties, tea has a calming and detoxifying effect on the skin. White tea is especially potent in that it is has three times as many antioxidant polyphenols as green or black tea and has been shown to be 100% more effective in mopping up free radicals that cause skin to sag. Some of the world's top cosmetic companies are becoming very interested in white tea for skin creams and the result is that high grade white tea is becoming even more rare than before.

Researchers at the Linus Pauling Institute in Oregon tested white teas on selected rates to test for the ability of white teas to disinfect and to protect the rates from colon health issues. Interestingly, white teas were found to be more effective than green tea in improving immunity but researchers were quick to point out that their study was on rats and the effects should not be extrapolated to humans. The researchers also discovered that white tea contains higher levels of caffeine compared to green tea brewed under the same complaints. They suggested that this could occur because white tea oxidizes during withering whereas in green tea the oxidation process is stopped early in the tea making process by steaming or panfiring.

This tea has a more delicate flavor and is best enjoyed without milk.

This noble hand-made tea is an ideal starter in the world of Chinese teas.

Pai means "white" and Mu Tan "peony". The tea is sun dried and then carefully roasted leaving the leaf whole with many silvery white tips.

Peony Root is native to China, chiefly produced in the Zhejiang, Anhui, and Sichuan provinces. The root is harvested in late summer or early fall and then washed clean. After removal of the lateral roots and skin, it is sometimes boiled for a short period and then dried. Peony is named after Paeon, the Greek physician to the gods. Peony Root was used at one time to keep away evil spirits and to help avoid nightmares.

Since the days of Hippocrates (470-377 B.C.), Peony Root has been recommended as a herb that can be used. The seeds of this plant were even worn as necklaces to ward off the problem. Only Paeonia suffruticosa (Tree Peony) can be used as an antiseptic and hepato-tonic, and used to help support female infertility. Peony helps clear blood congestion following traumatic injury. Peony Root can be used to help support many female complaints. In particular, it is considered to be highly effective in supporting menstrual cramps. It supports muscle tension, yet at the same time stimulates uterine muscles. Peony also calms the liver and nourishes the blood, helping to improve blood flow to the uterus. Women who use Peony for an extended period of time find that their skin becomes finer, smoother, softer and cleaner. An old saying in China is that women who consume Peony Root will become as beautiful as the Peony flower. Men also use Peony Root as well, since it has an anti-aging effect without effecting hormones.

The primary chemical constituents of Peony Root include monoterpene glycosides (paeoniflorin, albiflorin), asparagin, benzoic acid, triterpenoids, and sitosterol. When combined with Licorice Root, Peony's anti-spasmodic, analgesic qualities are magnified. The common name Peony includes the species Paeonia lactiflora, Paeonia albiflora, and Paeonia officinalis which are often used interchangeably with Paeonia suffruticosa.

Peony
Paeonia lactiflora Pallas (= P. albiflora).

Family: Paeoniaceae.

Other Names: White peony; bai shao yao (Chinese); pivoine (French); Chinesische Pfingstrose, Päonie (German); peonia (Italian).

Description: A leafy perennial herb with a strongly branched root. The leaves are compound, with oblong, red-veined segments. Attractive, large flowers are characteristic - they are usually white but may also be red or purple. Large seeds are borne in a segmented fruit comprising 3-5 few-seeded follicles. In European traditional health, the seeds of P. officinalis were a potential supportive and the petals are included in herbal teas, mainly to enhance their appearance. In China and Japan, species such as P. veitchii (chi shao, red peony) and P. moutan (= P. suffruticosa) , the source of mudan pi (moudan root bark), are listed in pharmacopoeias.

Origin: China, Japan and India (P. lactiflora); southern Europe (P. officinalis).

Parts Used: Dried root (Paeoniae radix rubra); in Europe, also the petals of P. officinalis (Paeoniae flos).

Therapeutic Category: Antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic.

Uses and Properties: The main use of the root in Chinese health is to help support menstrual disorders, such as amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, and dyspepsia stomach spasms, liver problems. Other uses in the traditional system of medicine include the support of symptoms related to memory issues, headache, vertigo, allergies and as an anticoagulant. In Chinese traditional health it is considered to be useful in case of fevers and externally to help support itchy and irritated skin, wounds, boils, sores and burns. In European health, roots and seeds of P. officinalis have been considered useful in the support of symptoms of joint pain, stomach complaints, cough and various skin disorders but they are no longer used.

Preparation and Dosage: The maximum daily oral dose is 6 - 15 g of the crude plant material.

Active Ingredients: The main active principle in white peony root is a monoterpenoid glycoside known as paeoniflorin (up to 5%) and various derivatives. Gallotannins are present in the roots and flowers. The petals typically contain anthocyanins such as paeonin (= paeonidin 3,5-diglucoside) and flavonoids (kaempferol derivatives).

Pharmacological Effetcs: Paeoniflorin showed analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, uterus-contractant, sedative and vasodilatory effects in test animals.

Status: Traditional health; Pharm. (P. officinalis); WHO 1 (P. lactiflora).

Tree peony (or shao-yao in Chinese) produces an acrid-tasting root that is the source of its health properties. It affects the systems of the body that include the liver, the blood, the uterus, and the skin. It is classified as an alterative, an antispasmodic, and a hepatic tonic.

Peony root is a liver tonic and is almost always used together with licorice root for helping support many health issues stemming from an imbalanced liver function. It is also a good blood purifier, useful in supporting skin eruptions and infections.

Peony is very useful in supporting all female complaints, especially menstrual irregularity and abdominal pains associated with the menstrual cycle. It is nourishing to the blood and can be used to help support anemia.

As an infant, Asclepius, the son of Apollo, was entrusted to the care of Chiron, the wisest of the Centaurs, who instructed the boy in the art of healthy mending. When Asclepius grew up he became the physician of the gods, and because of his medical knowledge was called paeon - helper. When Pluto was wounded by Hercules, Asclepius received from his grandmother, Leto, the goddess of darkness, a plant with which to help support Pluto. In Asclepius' honor, the plant was called peony (Paeonia officinalis). From Greek antiquity to the Middle Ages the roots and seeds of the peony were considered among the most potent herbs.
