• Traditionally used to help support health concerns, poor circulation, diarrhea, coughs, colds, varicose veins and more.
Bayberry is also known by the names Wax Myrtle, Candleberry, Candleberry Myrtle, Waxberry, and Tallow Shrub. The parts of this plant used for health benefits are the roots and bark. The only species of a useful family that is regarded as official, Myrica cerifera grows in thickets near swamps and marshes in the sand-belt near the Atlantic coast and on the shores of Lake Erie. The early colonists found the Bayberry tree growing throughout the East, but they used it to make fragrant candles rather than medicines. Initially, Bayberry was used for health benefits only in the South, where the Choctaw Indians boiled the leaves and drank the decoction to help support fever. Later, Louisiana settlers adopted the plant and drank bayberry wax in hot water for the most violent cases of dysentery.

During the early 19th century, Bayberry was popularized by Samuel A. Thomson, a New England herbalist. He touted it for producing "heat" within the body. Thomson recommended Bayberry for coughs, colds, and other infectious health issues in addition, to diarrhea and fever. The wax from the berries was once collected to make candles, cosmetics and soap. The dried berries are put in broth and used as spices. The berries are also used in Bay Rum, aftershave and some hair tonics. The extract of this herb attracts male Mediterranean fruit flies, which may be important as a natural pest control. The leaves are infused like tea, especially in China, as a stomachic and cordial. Bayberry stimulates lymphatic drainage and encourages the rejuvenating of mucous membranes.

The primary chemical constituents of Bayberry include essential oils, triterpenes (taraxerol, taraxaxerone, myricadol), flavonoids (myricitrin), phenols, starch, myrica wax (palmitic acid, stearic acid, myristic acid) lignin, albumen, gum, tannins, and gallic acid.

Contemporary herbalists recommend using the herb externally for varicose veins and internally for diarrhea, dysentery, coughs, colds, bleeding gums, and sore throat. It is excellent to use in the early stages of infection, as it contains myricitrin, which exhibits disinfectant activity. As a circulatory stimulant, Bayberry is a valuable astringent in diarrhea and dysentery. It is indicated in mucous digestive tract concerns. As a gargle it helps sore throats, and as a douche it helps in leucorrhea.

Bayberry
Myrica cerifera L. (= M. pensylvanica Loisel.).

Family: Myriaceae.

Other Names: Wax myrtle; waxberry; arbre à suif (French); Wachsmyrte (German); corteccia (Italian).

Description: Bayberry is an evergreen shrub or small tree of up to 10 m in height, with oblong leaves, inconspicuous yellow flowers in elongated clusters and grey waxy berries. Related species are bog myrtle (M. gale) and dune waxberry (M. cordifolia). See notes below.

Origin: North America; eastern and southern parts, mostly in the coastal Atlantic regions.

Parts Used: Root bark (candleberry bark, wax myrtle bark).

Therapeutic Category: Emetic, astringent, anticatarrhal.

Uses and Properties: The product is mainly used to help support mucous digestive tract issues but numerous other potential uses have been recorded, including supporting diarrhoea, coughs and colds, sore throat, heavy menstruation, leucorrhoea (as a douche) and irritations.

Preparation and Dosage: Infusion, decoctions or extracts of 0.6 - 2.0 g of powdered bark maybe taken three times a day. Powdered bark may be applied to irritations. Bark extracts are included in numerous commercial preparations.

Active Ingredients: The root bark contains the Eavonoid myricitrin, together with tannins and triterpenoids (including myricadiol, taraxerol and taraxerone). The wax (actually a lipid obtained from the skin of the fruits) contains esters of palmitic, myristic and lauric acids.

Health Effects: It is speculated that myriciinn may account for the reported disinfectant and choleretic effects. Tannins are astringent and provide a plausible explanation for some of the traditional uses.

Notes: The specific epithet cerifera means wax-bearing. In former times, the wax was a substitute for bees wax and used to make candles and scented bayberry soap. In South Africa, the wax of Myrica cordifolia (dune waxberry) is used to make candles and floor polish. Leaves of the European and North America M. gale, Myrti brabanticifolia, contain 0.4% essential oil (rich in 1,8-cineole) and flavonoids (myricetin). It is a traditional medicine that was used against bloating and to help support skin disorders.

Status: Traditional health; Pharm.

Bayberry, sometimes called candleberry, waxbeny, or wax myrtle, has a spicy, astringent flavor and affects the stomach, spleen, lungs, and liver. The bark possesses stimulant, astringent, expectorant, and diaphoretic properties and it can be used to help support coughs, coldss and fevers; it is astringent for hemorrhoids; and it may be used as a dentifrice. The biochemical constituents include a volatile oil, starch, lignin, albumin, gum, tannic and gallic acids, acrid and astringent resins, and an acid resembling saponin.

The most renowned use of bayberry bark is in "Dr. Thompson's Composition Powder." In the past it was commonly used by many doctors upon the first sign of colds and coughs. There are still many favored versions of composition powder. The use of bayberry in this formula acts as a stimulant to rally the body's defenses and resistance to health issues. Bayberry is used wherever an astringent is indicated. When unavailable, oak bark can be used in its place although this does not have the stimulating properties of bayberry bark.

Steep one teaspoon in a cup of boiling water, cover and allow to stand until cool enough to drink. Honey may be added to taste. It will effectively induce perspiration, improve circulation and tone all the tissues it contacts. In large doses it serves as an emetic. It may be used as a gargle for a sore throats. A fomentation made from this tea can be applied externally at night to help support varicose veins.

Bayberry bark can be used to help support prolapsed uterus and excessive menstrual bleeding, and may be used in a douche to help support vaginal discharge. It has also been valued for stopping hemorrhage of the bowels, lungs and uterus. The powder may be taken in gelatin capsules, two at a time as needed. Direct application of the powder to the gums is good for managing pyorrhea.
