• Traditionally used to help support asthma, coughs, whooping cough and much more.
Red Root is a half-hardy shrub growing to 4 or 5 feet high. It has downy leaves and stems and small ornamental white flowers in great numbers, coming into bloom June or July, followed by bluntly triangular seed vessels. It is usually called "New Jersey Tea" in America because its leaves were used as a substitute for tea during the War of Independence. In Canada, it is used to dye wool a cinnamon color. It takes its name from its large red roots. Its wood is tough, pale brown red, with fine rays - taste bitter and astringent with no odor. Its bark is brittle, dark-colored and thin. The leaves of Red Root are said to contain tannin, a soft resin and bitter extract, a green coloring matter similar to green tea in color and taste, gum a volatile substance, lignin, and a principle called "ceanothine."

Red Root exhibits astringent, antispasmodic, anti-syphilitic expectorant and sedative properties, used in asthma, chronic coughing, whooping-cough, consumption and dysentery; also as a mouth-wash and gargle. It can also be tried to help support throat problems such as tonsillitis, sore throat and thrush.

Red Root
Ceanothus americanus L.

Family: Rhamnaceae.

Other Names: New Jersey tea; céanothe d'Amérique (French); Amerikanische Sackelblurae (German); tè del New Jersey (Italian).

Description: Red root is a robust shrub of up to 1.5 m in height with bright green, oval leaves and clusters of small, white flowers.

Origin: Eastern parts of North America. The plant is easy to cultivate and is commonly grown as an attractive garden shrub.

Parts Used: Roots, root bark and leaves (Ceanothi folium, Ceanothi radicis cortex).

Therapeutic Category: Haemostyptic, astringent.

Uses and Properties: The roots and root bark is a traditional North Indian supportive for sore throat, fever and to help support bleeding of the lungs. They also used root extracts to help support skin infections, and the leaves as a herbal tea. During the civil wars, the leaves were used as a substitute for black tea, known as "New Jersey Tea". It is said to be used as a mouthwash and gargle. The roots are thought to be effective in supporting spasms, clearing mucous from the lungs and are used in the support for swollen lymph nodes and ailments of the spleen.

Active Ingredients: The plant contains unusual macrocyclic peptide alkaloids composed of five amino acids (ceanothin B-E, adouetin X,Y), together with several flavonoid glycosides (including quercitrin, rutin). Also present are tannins and triterpenes (mainly ceanothic acid, 27-hydroxy ceanothic acid and ceanothenic acid).

Health Effects: Ceanothic acid and ceanothenic acid have demonstrated health-supporting activity against oral concerns. The anti-spasmodic properties have been linked to the alkaloids, while the astringent effects are due to tannins. With the exception of the disinfectant properties, there is as yet no convincing scientific evidence to help support the varied uses in traditional medicine and modern herbal approaches.

Notes: Ceanothus species are an important component of chaparral vegetation in California and are widely used as garden shrubs.

Status: Traditional health.

Preparation and Dosage: A tea is prepared from one teaspoon of root bark in a cup of boiling Ceanothus americanus flowers.

A decoction of 1 ounce to 1 pint of boiling water simmered for 20 minutes. Take 1/2 cup three times daily; or 10-30 drops of coughs, coldsid extract.

Red root, or New Jersea tea, is a bitter, alkaloid-rich root that affects the lymphatic system, liver, and spleen. It has been traditionally used for lymphatic congestion, enlarged spleen or liver, coughs, uterine bleeding, hemorrhoids, increasing the platelet count as a result of medical treatments, and immunity issues. Various alkaloids, it is believed, are responsible for the lymphatic stimulating, expectorant, antispasmodic, and astringent actions of the herb.

Ceanothus can be used to help support lymphatic cleansing, enlarged spleen and liver, colds, coughs, whooping cough, tonsillitis, diphtheria, nasal congestion, nose bleeds, uterine bleeding, and hemorrhoids. Red root increases platelet counts that may have been lowered as a result of medical treatments. It also improves digestion and assimilation and firms up stools.
