Medicinal Usage

the "torment" plant - is what medieval physicians once called erect cinquefoil, because they believed it would support almost any pain. They attributed powerful health properties to this modest herb with dainty four-petaled yellow flowers. Over the years, herbalists specified the plant for fevers, fever, and warts. Indeed, as late as the 17th century the English court apothecary and herbalist John Parkinson wrote that, when steeped overnight in wine and then distilled, erect cinquefoil would "expel any venom or poison, or the plague, or any fever or horror, or the shaking fit that happens."

Since then, the employment of erect cinquefoil has declined to the extent that folk healers now esteem it chiefly as an astringent, a fever-reducing agent, and an agent that reduces the flow of blood. Its rhizome (underground stem) is the source of the tannin that accounts for the plant's astringent properties.

Modern herbals cite a tea made from the rhizome as an antipyretic (fever-reducing agent), an external astringent, and an antihemorrhagic (an agent capable of stopping the flow of blood). Scientists who have studied these uses question the tea's efficacy in reducing fever. But they have evidence that it may help fight moderate external bleeding and that it most likely does act an an external astringent, causing the skin and capillaries to contract.

General Herb Information

Habitat: Wet meadows, damp woods, mossy places.

Range: A native of Eurasia, cinquefoil has become naturalized locally in Newfoundland and eastern Massachusetts.

Identification: A perennial herb reaching 20 inches high and growing from an underground stem (rhizome). The leaves have three oblong toothed leaflets surrounded by two smaller leaf like appendages (stipules). Yellow flowers (June-August), about 1/2 inch wide, have four petals.

Uses: Because of its tannin content, erect cinquefoil has been used in the tanning of leathers, and the brownish-red rhizome has also been the source of a red dye.

Cinquefoil
[Silverweed: Potentilla anserina; Creeping Tormentil: Potentilla reptans (Culpeper: Potentilla)]

Medicinal Usage

Externally, cinquefoil was applied to cuts and wounds, or used as a gargle for a sore throats and mouth irritations. Internally, it can be used to help support diarrhoea and as an aid to digestion. Dioscorides recommended boiling "Myriophyllon" (Silverweed) in salted water to help support haemorrhages. Culpeper said that it "is an especial herb used in all inflammations and fevers, whether infectious or pestilential, or among other herbs to cool and temper the blood and humours in the body." Tormentil has similar properties to silverweed, but is more astringent and should be taken internally with care.

Culinary Usage

From prehistoric times until the introduction of the potato in the sixteenth century, the starchy roots of silverweed (Potentilla anserina) were eaten raw and cooked, or ground to make porridge and bread.

Miscellaneous

Cinquefoil was known to the Anglo-Saxons and listed by Aelfric. Its name is derived from the French for "five leaves". The roots of tormentil yield a red dye.
