Speedwell has long been used, particularly in Germany under the name European tea. It is thought to act as a stimulant, provoking urination and facilitating expectoration; it has been prescribed for chest health problems, such as chronic pulmonary catarrh, phthisis and coughs.

According to Johan Franke, it could help many illnesses. Erastus, Gesner, Eisner, Craton administered it for calculus affections; Murray thought on the contrary, because of its astringent properties, it would tend to condense the stones rather than dissolve them.

Its decoction has been advocated in intermittent fevers. At most, despite the qualities generally attributed to it, Speedwell can be some use as a light tonic in the convalescence of certain fevers, asthma and coughs.

Speedwell
Veronica officinalis L.

Family: Scrophulariaceae.

Other Names: Véronique officinale (French); Echter Ehrenpreis, Wald-Ehrenpreis (German); veronica (Italian).

Description: Speedwell is a spreading perennial herb of up to 0.2 m in height with small, hairy leaves borne in opposite pairs on rounded (non-angular) stems, and erect clusters of pale blue flowers.

Origin: Europe, western Asia and North America; it is wild-harvested mainly in eastern Europe.

Parts Used: Dried aboveground parts, known as speedwell herb or veronica herb (Veronicae herba).

Therapeutic Category: Traditional expectorant, general tonic.

Uses and Properties: Speedwell is a traditional useful plant that is not much used in modern phytotherapy except occasionally as an expectorant in cases of catarrhs of the respiratory tract, in cases of dyspepsia, biliary complaints, as a gargle to help support inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat, as topical application to promote wound-mending, to help support skin itching and to counter perspiration of the feet. It has been used in folk tradition as an expectorant, anti-joint pain, appetite stimulant, tonic, diaphoretic, and many more. The fresh and dried herb is popular in homoeopathy.

Preparation and Dosage: A dose of 1.5 g in 150 mL water may be taken two or three times per day. For topical use, an infusion or decoction of 10 - 20 g of the herb in a litre of water can be prepared.

Active Ingredients: Small amounts (up to 1%) of iridoid glycosides (aucubin, caralpol, esters of catalpol, such as veronicoside and verproside, ladroside), flavonoids (luteolin glycosides), organic acids (chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid), tannins, triterpenoids and beta-sitosterol have been found in the plant.

Health Effects: Experimental data suggest irritation-protective activities. Iridoid glycosides of other products have shown anti-inflammatory and secretolytic effects, that would explain part of the traditional indications. Detailed clinical studies are required to substantiate the indications of speedwell herb.

Notes: The related Veronicastrum virginicum (black root or Culver's root) is a traditional North Indian health. The rhizome is a strong purgative and emetic, and can be used to help support chronic constipation, liver complaints and gallbladder inflammation. The chemistry are poorly known.

Status: Traditional health.
